Selwyn, University appear strongest
Selwyn and University should be the leading teams in the summer A grade table tennis competition judging by their form in the opening round last evening. Selwyn won all 12 matches against the young Riccarton II team and K. Duffy’s straight sets win against P. Loh was the only match University dropped. Avonslde 111 caused a surprise by beating its No. 1 team on a count-back of games. B. T. Cross (Avonside I), playing his last club match in Christchurch—he has been transferred to the North Island—contributed three singles wins, but the doubles were decided in favour of Avonslde in. Riccarton I had a deceptively easy win against the promoted Linwood team, which won the winter senior reserve competition. Five matches went to three sets and a number were decided on advantage points. Points. — University, Selwyn, Avonside 111, Riccarton I 2, Linwood, Avonside 11, Riccarton 11, Avonside I 0.
