Xavier’s new site

A site of more than 36 acres has been purchased in the north-east for the relocated Roman Catholic Xavier College. The site, near Queen Elizabeth II Park, is bounded by New Brighton Road, Barkers Road, and residential frontages on Travis Road and Wattle Drive. The resiting of Xavier College, at present in Barbadoes Street, was recommended by the Canterbury Catholic Education Board in 1970. No decision has been taken whether the new school will remain a boys’ school or whether it will follow the pattern for other new Roman Catholic secondary schools built in the last five years and be re-formed as a coeducational school. The church proposes to sell the Barbadoes Street site, which is adjacent to the planned motorway.
