TROTTING Globe Bay holds off challenges for Cup
Globe Bay, after receiving the run of the race, surged to the front with more than a furlong to run and held off several determined challenges to win the $40,300 New Zealand Cup yesterday at Addington Raceway. Scottish ("harm finished gamely for second, ahead of Robalan and Royal Belmer.
The race, run at a muddling pace in the middle stages, was marred by a mix-up at the end of half a mile, the worst sufferer being the favourite, Rauka Lad, which paced a remarkable race afterwards to finish fifth.
I. M. Behrns, the driver of Hundred Pipers, was suspended until after November 18 for causing the incident. It was a rather tame contest until approaching the 5 furlongs, where Rauka Lad started to improve, with Manaroa and Bella’s Command also attempting to make ground from the rear. From then on it was a case of no quarter asked and none given, several of the lesserfancied candidates soon drop-| ping out of contention. Rauka Lad’s run carried I him to the front from Hun-j dred Pipers at the two fur-1 longs, with Globe Bay also improving sharply. Rauka I
Lad led to the straight from i Globe Bay and Scottish Charm, with Robalan waiting to challenge. Globe Bay [hit the front in a few strides and withstood all the challenges to win by three-quart-ers of a length from Scottish Charm, which made a renewed bid on the inside once properly clear. Robalan fought on for third half a length away, with a length and a quarter to Royal Belmer and a length and a half to Rauka Lad, which fought back gamely under pressure. Berkleigh was a neck away sixth, a length and a quarter in front of Hoover, with a nose to Royal Ascot, which was well clear of the remainder. Scottish Charm led out, but at the end of half a mile
Hundred Pipers moved off the fence, Berkleigh tangling and checking Rauka Lad badly. Hundred Pipers tangled soon after and Berkleigh again met trouble. Royal Belmer was in front for half a furlong before the end of half a mile, Robalan then taking over, to be passed two furlongs later by Hundred Pipers. Manaroa, Arapaho, Wag, Royal Ascot and Bella’s Command broke at the start. Well placed Globe Bay had received “a perfect run” all the way, said his Templeton trainer-driver, J. A. Carmichael. “But I was lucky to keep out of trouble in the mix-up after half a mile,” he added. “I thought
I was going to be pushed down on the rails and I didn’t want that. With horses moving about I was a little worried that he might be knocked, but it didn’t eventuate,” he said delightedly. Carmichael, one of the most accomplished reinsmen in New Zealand, has trained Globe Bay since he was a three-year-old. At times he has been inclined to race erratically and has come under official notice.
He has now had 15 wins and 21 placings for $57,825 for his Woodend breeder, Mr S. J. Wheatley. Globe Bay will race in the New Zealand Free-for-all on Friday, after which he will be prepared for the Auckland Cup next month, to be followed in February by the Inter-Dominion Championship series in Sydney.
A six-year-old gelding by the 1954 New Zealand Cup winner, Johnny Globe, he is out of Baylight, by Light Brigade from Pleasure Bay, a half-sister to Colwyn Bay, the dam of Cardigan Bay, and Dorstan, a good winner for Mr Wheatley. Baylight was bred by Roydon Lodge Stud, Yaldhurst, and bought by Mr Wheatley for 465 guineas in 1965.
“Best beginning” D. D. Nyhan, the trainerdriver and part-owner of Robalan, was pleased with his horse’s run. However, he felt he would have been better suited by a slower pace early. Robalan had made probably his best beginning of the season, said Nyhan. His cousin, R. P. Nyhan, the driver of Rauka Lad, was disconsolate after the race. "He was a certainty beaten,” he said. “But for that knock after half a mile he must have won. As it was I was amazed he finished so close.” None of the other drivers had any excuses to offer.
