A. J. Shaw to make opening drive

A salute to the great players of the past is always given at the Masters Tournament in Augusta, with a couple of veterans hitting the first drives.

There will be an echo of this at Templeton on Sunday, when the professional section of the Terry Kelso invitation pro-am tournament will be started by A. J. Shaw. Shaw, who won seven New Zealand Open titles, was the outstanding player in the country in the 1920’s and 1930’5. He will drive a ball from the first tee to begin the $5OO tournament. There are 22 professionals in the field, and this number may be increased in the next few days. There is also a strong amateur entry, one of the most notable players be-

ing a former New Zealand representative, G. D. Brown. Several Freyberg Rose Bowl players will compete, among them T. E. Pfhalert and A. C. Browne from Ashburton, G. L. Titmus and E. H. Richards from Canterbury. Another with a strong chance is J. W. Prebble, who was runner-up to B. C. Taylor in the recent Canterbury amateur championship.
