SINGING BETTER
(N.Z.P.A. Staff Correspondent) PARIS.
The Kiwis might not have beaten the French Rugby League team on the field, but they certainly sing better than the Tricolours, writes Alan Graham, N.Z.P.A. staff correspondent. D. A. Williams and P. C. Orchard are both capable guitar players, and it does not take much to get a song session under way.
At Marseilles, the Kiwis had several singing sessions in the pavement cafe outside their hotel, and a substantial crowd usually gathered to cheer, sing and dance.
The hotel manager realised this was good for business, and was offering a free beer all round if the Kiwis would sing. Among the watchers after the France-Kiwis game was P. Aubert, the successful goalkicker of the 19505. He is always keen to meet New Zealand teams, and to sing a chorus or two of “Alouette.” Also in Marseilles was J. Chapman, a former Taranaki and Auckland Marist full-back who has lived in France for several years. A professor of geography, he is still playing Rugby league for the popular Montpellier club.
