Scout group’s jubilee
The St Matthew’s scout group, St Albans, will celebrate its fiftieth anniversary this week-end, and to mark the occasion has produced a booklet giving the history of the troop from its beginnings when it was part of the Avonside Troop. The St Matthew’s group was formed from the Avonside troop probably in 1921, taking with it the sub-title of “Lady Liverpool’s Own,” an honour conferred by the wife of the then GovernorGeneral (the Earl of Liverpool) in recognition of service by the troop at ceremonial functions .
From then until 1957, the group met at the St Matthew’s Church hall. After three years of fund-raising, the group was able to build and move into its own scout den in Harrison Street, St Albans. In its 50 years, the group has had the distinction of providing 52 King’s and Queen’s Scouts. The jubilee celebrations will begin this evening with an anniversary dinner and dance, with scouting functions and a group show on Saturday. On Sunday, there will be a church parade at St Matthew’s Church, and a car rally and barbecue in the afternoon.
