ONE-MAN SHOWS

The C.S.A. gallery is full of paintings this week by four of New Zealand’s bestknown artists, who are having separate one-man shows. Ralph Hotere,. of Dunedin, opened his exhibition yesterday; and last week paintings by Colin McCahon, of Auckland went on display. The other two artists are Jeffrey Harris and Graham Barton.

Mr Hotere is showing 15 paintings in his “Port Chalmers” series. All are acrylic on canvas, all are 4ft square, and all are priced at $250. They were completed in his Port Chalmers studio in April, and were exhibited in the Barry Lett Gallery, Auckland, during the Auckland Arts Festival in May. The series relates to two earlier series of paintings by Mr Hotere, the “Zero” series (1966-67) and the “Black Paintings” (1968-69). Hotere, who went to Dunedin in 1969 as Frances Hodgkins fellow at the University of Otago and later made his home there, was born in Hokianga in 1931.
