NEW PILOT PLANT
Animal bile process (N.Z. Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, October 19. A large-scale pilot plant designed to manufacture pharmaceuticals from animal bile came into use in the department of bio-technology at Massey University yesterday. The pilot plant will be used until late next year, when the final plant takes over on a 14-acre site near Linton. The proprietors and originators of the project are New Zealand Pharmaceuticals, Ltd, combining the main meat freezing companies in New Zealand, and Tasman Vaccine Laboratory, Ltd. The pilot plant will process 10 tons of evaporated gall, much of it from the freezing companies involved in the project. The solid material is dissolved, put through a complicated chemical process, and results in three refined pharmaceutical grade bile acids. These acids will be exported for use in the manufacture of the Cortisone group of drugs and other steroids.
