Kiwi chicks at zoo

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Oct. 19. Auckland Zoo was a step nearer to being able to establish a kiwi colony, said its director, Mr D. Wood, today. Two eggs laid in July had now hatched and both chicks were alive and well. Another egg was laid about two weeks ago. “It’s the first time kiwis have been bom here,’’ said Mr Wood. Few kiwis had been bom in captivity in New Zealand. A zoo in Ausralia had succeeded in breeding one. He attributed the birth of two kiwis to improvements in diet and the fact that some birds could be placed in the new kiwi nocturnal place and the others could be left in isolated breeding places without being disturbed.

The newly-hatched birds will not be on display to the public.
