Silent seats for Opera House
More than half of the 2690 seats in the concert hall have been fitted already, and similar seats will be installed in the opera theatre (capacity 1530), drama theatre (550), and cinema-chamber music hall (420). Acoustic clouds, “floating” above the orchestra platform, are another feature of the concert halt Each of the 21 clouds is a ring of hollow perspex shaped like a ship’s lifebuoy about six feet across. They are suspended on stainless steel cables and can be raised and lowered. The concert hall will be handed over to the Sydney Opera House Trust early in January next year, as will the cinema and opera theatre. The drama theatre is expected to be completed by December this year, and the finishing touches to the sloom Opera House will be completed by June. The photograph above shows the nearly completed concert hall with some of the hydraulic seats in place
and the acoustic clouds hanging over the orchestra platform.
