Horse-jumping and much else on Monday

Several of the top combinations in the South Island will compete in the horse-jumping show at the Rangiora Show Grounds on Monday. Organised by the Junior Committee, Canterbury area of the New Zealand Horse Society, in conjunction with the Rangiora District Chapter of Jaycee, the jumping show and fun carnival have become increasingly popular during recent years. As well as horsejumping, the entertainment will include a dog show, a display of hot rod cars, a gymnastic performance and the usual side shows. Record entries have been received for the horsejumping show, the feature events being the Labour Day show jumping championship and the South Island Juvenile Championship. A total of 130 horses and riders will compete during the day. Feature events Open to A and C grade horses, the Labour Day championship has attracted 23 entries, six more than last year. Favoured combinations include Southland’s B. Anderson riding Cardiff Lass, which last year won the New Zealand Horse of the Year competition; Geelong, ridden by Miss J. Cresswell (Christchurch), Mighty Tarn, ridden by Mrs A. McCully (Timaru), Mrs G. C. West (Rangiora) riding Dusky Bay, D. Youngman

(Rangiora) riding Merano, and from Christchurch, Shakes, ridden by J. Bourne. The South Island Juvenile Championship is for riders under 21 years and is a prestige event with entries from most parts of the South Island. Entries in this event are well above last year with; 37 horses taking part. Com-! petition is expected to be i close with the favoured ‘ combinations being Miss A.; Wightman, “Gay Prince”! (Rangiora); Miss K. Smith,; “Sirroco” (Christchurch); Miss J. McLean, “Hi Lyte” (Amberley); “Bambi” ridden by Miss A. Lemon (Ashburton); the Leetham brothers of Ashburton riding “Anzac” and “The Rock;” Miss G. Wilding riding “Craypot” (Kaikoura); and “Ribbonwood” ridden by Miss M. Gould (Christchurch). The final round of the Peerless Mini Circuit for horses will be held in conjunction with the show. Miss J. Cresswell riding “Sata” is the present leader with 24 points. The pony section, which still has several rounds to go, is led by Miss A. Wightman riding “Gay Prince” with 39 points. The Christchurch Rod Benders Club will have 13 cars on display again this year. Regular exhibits at the show for several years, the cars are very popular with young children and many dads. During the lunch break, a team of gymnasts from

Bucketts Gymnasium will perform in the show ring to provide a change from horse-jumping.
