Museum appeal at $190,000
To date, $190,195 had been given or promised to the appeal fund for the new wing at the Canterbury Museum, the chairman of the appeal committee (Mr P. J. Skellerup) reported to the monthly meeting of the Museum Trust Board yesterday. About 450 persons had volunteered to help raise funds—and if all had been sincere in their offer, the target of $250,000 would have been raised some weeks ago. But not more than 100 had turned up to help, Mr Skellerup said. He had every reason to believe that a request to the Government for a grant of $150,000 would be met after an approach to the Prime Minister (Mr Marshall). The board had a responsibility to those who had given money to proceed with the building as planned, Mr Skellerup said. Costs were rising at up to 10 per cent a year, and so delay would only compound the board’s problems.
