Jan’s Beau wins
fN.Z.P.A. Staff Correspondent) MELBOURNE. The "old firm” of the former New Zealand galloper, Jan’s Beau, and the New Zealand jockey, G. R. Edge, successfully renewed their acquaintance at Caulfield yesterday to take the $19,000 Coongy Handicap—and put paid to the chances of three runners of getting a start in Saturday’s $75,000 Caulfield Cup. Jan’s Beau won the race, over 2000 m., by a neck from another former New Zealander, Stormy Seas, which thus clinched his place in the Caulfield Cup field. Stormy Seas was awarded the last of the 18 places in the Caulfield Cup when final acceptances were taken on Tuesday, but had he been beaten by either Fair Share, Ahjay, or Mixed Grill yesterday he would have had to concede his spot. Jan’s Beau was confidently supported on the track yesterday, when it became known that Edge would ride him, and he shortened in pre-race betting from 10/1 to start at 6/1. Jan’s Beau led all the way and won by a neck from Stormy Seas, the 9/4 favourite.
