DAIRYING IN AUST.
Decision on control (N Z P.A Staff Correspondent) SYDNEY, Oct. 18. Butter, cheese, and other milk products will be subject to production control under a decision taken by the Aus tralian Agricultural Council in Melbourne. The council, made up of state and Federal Ministers of Agriculture, agreed ini principle to proposals for a production-control scheme for the manufacturing sector of the dairy industry. At the same time, decision was deferred on the adjustment of table-margarine production quotas—at a time when the New Zealand Parliament has a bill before it calling for the lifting of restrictions on the production pf polyunsaturated table margarine.
The proposals for the Australian dairy industry provide for the establishment of a national preferred-price; quota, based on the estimated' domestic consumption of i butter, cheese, and pro-! cessed milk products. State quota allocations! will be made in a formula ye« ■ to be determined, and each state will decide whether its quota will be allocated as factory quotas, or as individual farm quotas. The council also decided to take steps to reduce Australia’s over-production of eggs, by introducing measures to" licence producers to a maximum number of laying hens. A total hen quota of 12.9 million will be introduced, which will be divided among the states.
