Final acceptances for Caulfield Cup

(N.Z.PA. Staff Correspondent)

MELBOURNE.

With four horses scrambling to gain the one vacant place in the field for Saturday’s $76,000 Caulfield Cup, the Coongy Handicap, of 2000 metres, at the Caulfield meeting today has taken on an importance far and above its $lO,OOO prize-money.

Only 17 fully qualified starters were left in the Caulfield Cup when the final payment of $2BO was made yesterday. Eighteen may go to the post In the Caulfield Cup, and so Victorian Amateur Turf Club officials had to scan the money-earnings of the four non-qualifiers among the 21 horses to make the final acceptance.

They said that the former New Zealander, Stormy Seas, was the one nearest to the qualifying stipulation, and so he has been tentatively included in the field of 18 for Saturday. The New Zealanders, Ahjay and Fair

Share, and the Sydney galloper, Mixed Grill, were the three left beyond the 18. All four horses, however, will start in the Coongy Handicap and a win for any of them would get them over the second balloting clause of the Caulfield Cup. which requires a horse to have won a race worth more than $4150 to the winner since January 1. When officials found that all four non-qualified acceptors were running in the Coongy Handicap, they decided to leave the final make-up of the field and the two emergencies until tomorrow morning, when the draw for barrier nositions will be made.
