GAMES POST

The Commonwealth Games Organising Committee yesterday announced the appointment of Mr G. Swift as its communications controller.

Mr Swift is the Post Office’s district engineer in Invercargill and he has been seconded by the department to work for the organising committee. He will work from the committee's headquarters in Colombo Street.

Mr Swift, who is 39, is a member of the New Zealand Institute of Engineers and before his move to Invercargill was a Post Office engineer in Auckland and Whangarei. He is a former Auckland and New Zealand hockey representative and also represented Auckland in athletics. The chairman of the communications committee (Mr W. B. Barnes) said that Mr Swift would be appointed to this committee and his main responsibility would be to assist in the determining and the operating of the communications facilities necessary for the functioning of the Games. He said that Mr Swift would also head a small subcommittee of technical liaison officers, one of whom would be attached to each of the nine sports control committees.
