Christmas present for M.P.s

Every member of Parliament (87 after the General Election) will receive a Christmas present of two books supplied by the Citizens Association for Racial Equality. The books are “The Discarded People,” by Father Comas Desmond, and “Political Football,” by Stewart Harris. The cost of the Christmas present for the M.P.s will be $2OO and C.A.R.E. already has $55 in donations. The idea of the Christmas present came from Mr J. S. Morton of Milford, who wrote to C.A.R.E.’s magazine saying that recent outbursts from certain members of Parliament had led him to the conclusion that “many of our elected representatives are either abysmally ignorant of the plight of coloured people in South Africa, or unashamedly racist” Mr Morton said that the book by Father Desmond “gives an account of the

way in which the ruthless pursuit of apartheid, the Bantu resettlement schemes and the systematic destruction of African communities had shattered and demoralised Bantu society.” He said that Stewart Harris’s book was an incisive and thoughtful account of last year’s Springbok Rugby tour of Australia.
