Painting at 82

A West Coast artist, James (Dusty) Rhodes, now aged 82, is painting the sets for the Greymouth Operatic Society’s coming production of “Calamity Jane.” This is the twelfth time Mr Rhodes has prepared the sets and backdrops for the society’s annual shows. He has based his scenes on those from “Rose Marie,” which he painted in 1953. Mr Rhodes estimates that he will be working on the backdrop sheets and flats for another month. There are five backdrop sheets, each 36ft by 18ft, and 24 flats, 18ft by 4ft.
