Grants from fellowship

Grants totalling $31,750 were made at the three-day biennial convention of the New Zealand Methodist Women’s Fellowship held in Christchurch recently. Overseas workers, including New Zealand nurses and deaconesses, received grants of about $3OOO. Provision was also made for initial grants to new workers. About $4350 was distributed from the Stamp Fund. Recipients were home and

overseas sisters, fraternal workers and deaconess trainees. A grant to the new Maori division, travel to ecumenical consultations on service (in New Zealand and overseas), the Overseas Scholarship fund, and the publication of a history, were also included in the distribution of funds. More than $24,000 was made in grants from the general funds. Grants of $B2OO were made to the Overseas Mission Board and the Home Mission Board, and $6OOO to Seamer House. The latter was the fellowship’s special objective for fund raising. For 1973 the special objective will be to learn more about each region of the united church, it was decided at the meeting. A target of $5250 to be raised for seven Pacific Island regions including the Solomons and Papua-New Guinea, was set. The Kurahuna scholarship and grants committee disbursed $1650 in scholarships and grants ranging from $25 to $4OO to 15 Methodist Maori girls during the year. It also made an advance of $l5OO to the Maori Education Foundation.

The convention, held at the St Alban’s Methodist Church, was attended by members of the national executive, representative of districts, official observers, members of the

Maori Women’s Fellowship — Te Roopu Wahine — a deaconess, and observers from six sister churches. The newly elected president is Mrs W. H. Price.
