N.Z. MARKET LOSES GROUND IN QUIETER TRADING
The New Zealand sharemarket lost ground in moderately active trading yesterday. Fall outnumbered rises by a narrow margin, but the leaders were easier.
The freezing companies showed good rises while retailers held their ground or improved. Interest was maintained in the building trade and merchants.
S.F.M. jumped 15c to 205 c on the strength of the asset revaluation and the profit prospects of the industry. Waitaki was 10c higher at 155 c and the rights gained 5c at 40c. C.F.M. was down 4c at 141 c.
Freightways was 2c higher at 270 c but trading in the stock was quiet. The retailers had a good tone. D.I.C. and F.T.C. were higher on the day, but close to recent prices, while Haywrights gained 3c at 105 c. Milne’s continued to suffer from the loss. Ashby Bergh and Jas. J. Niven rose 5c each. The finance companies were quiet again. Broadlands
was 1c up, but C.S.I. was ' down Ic. I Alex Harvey fell sc, as did 1 the Consolidated Brick shares and notes. i The Kidd Garrett shares 1
were steady at 95c on veryhigh volume, but the notes lost 5c on a sale of 100. The stock and station agents were marginally lower.
