Trust opposes centre site

The Christchurch Civic Trust decided last evening to write to the Postmaster-Gen-eral (Mr Walker) and the Minister of the Environment (Mr Maclntyre) about the siting of the planned postal centre in Hereford Street.

The trust board regretted “that the Postmaster-General has not seen fit to acknowledge that the Hereford Street site may not be the best on environmental grounds” and noted that this criticism had been made by a number of Christchurch architects. A letter was received from the Prime Minister (Mr Marshall) declining to intervene, but saying that the possibility of enlarging the site to mitigate the size of the building was being considered.
