Animal Sunday
Sir,—Animal Sunday, held to commemorate the sainthood of St Francis of Assisi, has passed almost without notice. Last year, with the hope of making people more aware of their responsibility towards animal welfare, 1500 folders were printed, containing suggestions for a form of service to be held on Animal Sunday. The S.P.C.A., Scotland, was responsible for the original copies sent to all denominations throughout Scotland and England. What response was recorded I do not know, but in New Zealand the lack of acknowledgement was remarkable. Out of 1500 envelopes addressed to the minister personally, with folder and an accompanying letter, sealed and stamped, exactly 20 acknowledgements were re-
ceived, these from bishops, courteous and sympathetic, and one from a minister advising me to mind my own business and not to try to teach him his. If this is the brand of advice given young people seeking the meaning of life, I suggest a course in courtesy be included with the study of theology. — Yours, R. J. GLEN. October 11, 1972.
