Lyttelton ferry service
Sir, —The Minister of Marine has no business to give the permission required by law for the Maori to be sold overseas. If he hesitates to
insist on the Union Company's keeping her at a loss, the solution is for the Government to purchase both steamers and integrate the Lyttelton service into the public transport system. The overnight inter-island steamer is the only cheap service that is not time-wasting. Its popularity will not return until we have- two ships running each way each night. Meanwhile, after two demonstrations of what happens when a steamer is knocked out of action, how can Mr Gordon say that the Lyttelton run “is assured” when we are completely dependent on the Rangatira? Our leading advocates for the South Island must be all in the income and health brackets for air travel, or they would not tolerate this.—Yours, etc.„ ELSIE LOCKE. October 13, 1972.
