More for lambs
Farmers will get more for their lambs next week, because of rising wool prices. The values of lamb skins have been raised by 15c where they have 0.5 kilograms of wool on them, and by up to 36c where they carry a kilogram of wool. Meat prices, however, are unchanged. The prime 301 b lamb with a wool pull of 0.7 kilograms is now worth $8.25, whereas this time last year it was worth $4.58. The new skin prices are: 0.5 kilo wool pull, 186 c per head; 0.55 kilos, 194 c; 0.60 kilos, 201 c; 0.65 kilos, 209 c; 0.70 kilos, 216 c; 0.75 kilos, 223 c; 0.80 kilos, 230 c; 0.85 kilos, 238 c; 0.90 kilos, 245 c; 0.95 kilos, 253 c; one kilogram, 260 c. In its opening week of killing, the Islington works of the New Zealand Refrigerating Company, Ltd, had handled 10,000 lambs, said Mr G. H. Steel, the company’s livestock manager, yesterday. This was 4000 less than had been anticipated, and was because of the rain last week-end and early in the week. Lambs were, however, coming forward in good condition for the time of the year, and were weighing well, some lines going up to 341 b, Mr Steel said.
