Ban on imports of cheap radios
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 13. The importing of cheap portable radios has been banned as a result of a report by the Emergency Protection Authority.
Licences for radio imports are to be endorsed to prevent their being used for radio sets with a landed value of less (than $8 each. ! A spokesman for the Manufacturers’ Federation (Mr M. F. Dawson) said the decision would effectively protect | New Zealand makers of portable radios. I “It will probably mean that licences will be chan-; Inelled into the more expen-i
sive type of radios, including car radios and radiocassettes,” he said. "At least there will not be the same volume to worry about, because of the higher price,” he said. The Tariff and Development Board will hold an inquiry next March on the nature and degree of protection necessary for the New Zealand radio.manufacturing industry.
