U.K. cricket tour post
Mr J. C. Saunders, of Christchurch, has been appointed manager of the New Zealand cricket team for the tour of England next year.
Mr Saunders, who is the treasurer of the New Zealand Cricket Council, won the appointment in a ballot of board members from Mr R. A. Vance (Wellington). Mr J .G. Leggat, a third nomination for the position, put forward at the recent annual meeting of the council, informed board members earlier this week that he was not available. Mr Saunders, a senior cricketer for many years, has a long record of administrative service to the game. He was secretary of the Canterbury association for nine years, its treasurer for five, vice-president for five, and president for two. He represented the Canterbury association on the board of control for three years before becoming treasurer four years ago. He had 13 years’ service with the Victory Park Board, being chairman during the spectacular building programme which provided Lancaster Park with the present major grandstands.
Rugby.—The Rumanian Rugby team scored its second win in two matches in England when it defeated a combined DevonCornwall XV, 6-3. League. — Yorkshire beat Lancashire, 32-18. in a Rugby league county championship match.
