Test batch of coke

(N.Z. Press Association) OAMARU, Oct. 13. A trial batch of metallurgical coke was produced by the Oamaru gasworks today. The retorts at the gasworks were emptied in the early afternoon, and the engineer (Mr N. Barrington) said later that porosity tests had shown the coke to be better than that of the Christchurch producer, the Smokeless Fuel Company, Ltd. The shatter tests were above those of the Christchurch product, and the density was 1 per cent higher. The coke withstood a crush test of 1121 b to the square inch. A final test will be made next week of the suitability of the coke for use in furnaces.
