YACHTSMAN DELAYED
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, October 13. Dr David Lewis hopes to leave Sydney on Sunday to begin his single-handed voyage to the Antarctic. Dr Lewis, aged 49, is still having problems with his yatch’s self steering gear, and the starting date will be postponed until early next week if he is not satisfied with week-end trials in his 32ft sloop Ice Bird. Official disapproval of the voyage had been withdrawn in a “charming” letter from the Australian Minister for Shipping and Transport (Mr Peter Nixon), said Dr Lewis yesterday. Mr Nixon had urged him to “forget the venture” because he could risk the lives of rescuers if he struck trouble.
Dr Lewis has been working on his yacht for the last three weeks. It has been strengthened with steel plates over the windows and cockpit entrance to make it watertight. He hopes to reach the Antarctic Peninsula by Christmas and spend time at the British base there before sailing around the world via Cape Horn and finally back to Sydney. Then he will travel to the Northern Territory to study Aboriginal tracking methods, under a grant from the Aboriginal Research Foundation.
