Garden clubs’ show

More than 500 entries from six clubs were exhibited at the north-west garden clubs’ flower show at the Canterbury Horticultural Society's J. R. Templin Hall yesterday. When the show was held for the first time last year only three clubs from the north-west Christchurch area entered exhibits. This year’s show comprised five sections for cut flowers, trees and shrubs, pot plants, decorative exhibits and vege* tables. Proceeds from the show will go to the Anglican City Mission’s Open Door Centre and entries in the hospital arrangement class of the decorative section will be given to Christchurch instltutions. The clubs exhibiting are Upper Riccarton-Sockburn, Riccarton, Fendalton, Ham, Burnside and Walrarapa. No prizes were awarded at the show, which was judged by Mr H. G. Gilpin, director of parks and reserves (pot plants, trees and shrubs), Mr S. W. Gower, president of the Canterbury Horticultural Society (vegetables and cut flowers), Mrs M. Okey (decorative, open) and Miss M. Watllng (decorative, novice). The largest section, of flowering trees and shrubs. Included classes for azaleas, camellias, rhododendrons, ericas, native plants and berrying and flowerin^lasses S in this section were outstanding in quality, quantity and variety, Mr Gilpin said. “They would do credit to any flower show.” Mrs Okey said there was more variety in the decorative section this year and entries were of a very high standard. They showed Imagination and originality. The classes included miniature, tall and slender, monochromatic, colour contrast and Oriental Influence arrangements. Five clubs each entered a basket of vegetables and herbs in the vegetable section. The wln-

ning entry, from the Ham Garden Club, contained 17 varieties of vegetables and herbs. The winners of other sections were: Cut flowers, Fendalton Garden Club; shrubs and trees, Walrarapa; pot plants, Fendalton; vegetables, Dam; decorative (open), Fendalton and Walrarapa; decorative (novice). Ham.
