LIFTING TITLES

Ebert top contender The Olympic Games representative, A. J. Ebert (Canterbury) should have no difficulty winning the middleweight title in the national weight-lifting championships at Dunedin tomorrow. Although Ebert has had a rest since he competed at Munich, his performances in training this week indicate he should easily defeat the present title-holder, G. Hansford (Auckland), and his other main opponent, P. Brosnahan. who has come from Australia for the contest. Also representing Canterbury is the much-improved provincial light heavy-weight champion, R. Smart. His big training poundages show that he has an excellent chance of taking the title. His main opponent is J. Shirley (Northland), whose recent fonn has not been in the same class as Smart's. Canterbury's other lifter, P. Doreen, has shown steady improvement, and he should benefit from the experience of national competition against the title-holder, B. Cameron (Auckland).
