HOCKEY APPEAL LAUNCHED
A New Zealand-wide appeal to raise $lOO,OOO to hold an international men’s hockey tournament in Christchurch in 1974 was launched last evening. An immediate offer came from Trans Tours N.Z., Ltd, for $2OOO worth of sponsorship. Officially opening the appeal, the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr N. G. Pickering) also offered hope of a contribution being made by the Christchurch City Council. “A tournament of this type will mean a lot to Christchurch and I will be very surprised if the City Council does not contribute in some way
to the appeal,” Mr Pickering said. The meeting, comprising largely of businessmen, was told by Mr T. I. Crossen, chairman of the council to direct the appeal, that the proposed tournament had three objectives. These were the exposing of provincial and national hockey players to international competition; the creating of an opportunity whereby New Zealand could gain an international ranking and as a result secure an invitation to the 1976 Olympics, and the promoting of hockey in New Zealand.
