RANDOM REMINDER

CORRIGAN

Man’s inhumanity to man can take all sorts of forms. It sometimes goes under the euphemistic title of practical joker. The practical joker is a sad case, really, for he has only to enjoy the laughter of his fellows at something he has perpetuated to be encouraged into planning an even more spectacular jest. But occasionally, the practical joker does a worth-while job, and there was surely a lesson to be learned by the victim of one performance which took place

in a Canterbury country district recently. It was a men’s night at an establishment noted for its enjoyment, on such special occasions, of the good things of life. And there were visitors there from Christchurch. One of them enjoyed himself immensely, but took his liking of the wine rather further than was reasonable. By late in the evening, he was not very weii, and when it became time for adieus, he was considerably below his best. He requested a friend to arrange transport for him,

away from the sink of iniquity into which he had so readily launched himself. His friend, although clearly disenchanted by our hero’s performance, agreed to undertake this mission. He bundled the inebriate into his car, and drove off into the night. Towards the township of Rolleston. And the Rolleston railway station. There he managed to lever his Christchurchbound friend on to the rail car. Which was pointing towards Greymouth.
