Steel-pipe contract

(N.Z. P. A .-Reuter—Copyright) ADELAIDE, October 11. The president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions, Mr Robert Hawke, i hinted that industrial action i might result if Australian ‘companies were not given a chance to participate in a ss4m contract for steel pipes awarded to the giant Japanese company, Mitsubishi, by the Australian Gas Light Company. The contract is for material to be used in the construction of an 800-mile pipeline to carry natural gas from South Australia to Sydney and other New South Wales centres. “It was known from the start that our own industry could not meet requirements for more than 45 to 50 per cent of the pipes, but that does not mean that our industry should be completely overlooked,” Mr Hawke said. “Australia will not be allowed to suffer this kind of business politics. We are not going to stand for this.”
