Electricity charges

A system of price control on the retail sale of electricity instead of the recent form of blanket controls was favoured by the South Island Local Bodies’ Association yesterday. It agreed to ask the Electricity Supply Authorities’, Municipal and Counties’ Associations for their support. The Christchurch City Council submitted a remit to this effect with a view to preventing the recurrence of a situation whereby the imposition of a price freeze at short notice, “and with an apparent disregard of all circumstances,” could occur and place some supply authorities in a difficult financial situation while others which had recently increased tariffs could have been making an unfair charge on their customers, Mr D. R. Dowell said. Delegates from other local authorities supplying power said they had been “caught with their pants down” by the price freeze, and Mr A. Pomeroy, Invercargill, said .ratepayers had to meet increased costs.
