Wool marketing
Sir, —New Zealand woollen mills and knitwear and carpet manufacturers maintain that, with high wool prices, survival for them means switching 100 per cent to synthetic fibre. What say small groups of farmers and the New Zealand manufacturers got together, regionally? The farming group would propose: you offer us a price for wool which will enable you to build a sound export industry, and we will accept, even though it may only be a third of the current auction price. The manufacturer would reply: right, and we will stick to our side of the agreement by supporting you when the price pendulum swings and hits the other side. It would be a bold Government which would attempt to include within the total acquisition plan, and the suicidal auction system those who took such practical steps in a small way, to put the industry on a sound basis.— Yours, etc., A. H. McELREA. Ashburton, October 12, 1972.
