Lord Nelson wins again

(N.Z. Press Association) MELBOURNE. The New Zealand galloper, Lord Nelson, survived a protest after beating his compatriot, Ahjay, in the $7250 Cranboume Cup, over 10J furlongs, yesterday. The race was run in very heavy going after hail and rainstorms flooded the track earlier in the afternoon.

Lord Nelson, starting at 7/1 —he eased from 4/1 apparently because of his unknown ability on a rain-affected track—got home by half a neck from Ahjay (18/1) with the South Australian galloper, General Filou (6/1), a short half head away third.

S. Aitken, the apprentice rider of Ahjay, protested against Lord Nelson on two grounds—alleged interference at the start and again nearing the winning post. The objection hearing lasted nearly 20 minutes before it was dismissed.

The former Queensland jockey, L HUI, rode Lord Nelson.

The gelding settled in second position behind Grand Harvest. Ahjay, third on settling, moved up to join Grand Harvest with half a mile to go and this pair led into the straight from Lord Nelson.

Lord Nelson’s stablemate, Hay Burner, started at 10/1, but was never a possibility. Lord Nelson won over a mile at Caulfield at his previous start.
