Rent rise predicted

(N.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, Oct. 11.

Rents would rise by 16.1 per cent for the year ending next March if they continued to rise at the rate revealed in the price index released tonight by the Department of Statistics, said Mr W. A. Fraser (Lab., St Kilda) tonight. Between March and September this year rents rose by 7.8 per cent and this snowballs into a compound rise for the year of 16.1 per cent.

“These figures make a mockery of the Govrnment’s stabilisation measures and reveal even more the callous attitude of the Government in failing to help those who are being rack-rented and who are out of homes,” said Mr Fraser, who is Labour’s spokesman on housing. The figures released by the department were only New Zealand averages—and rent rises were certain to have been higher in the bigger centres, where the housing crisis was greater, he said.
