War survivors sought

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) TOKYO, Oct. 11. A Japanese mission is to search jungle-covered islands in the West Pacific in the hope of finding alive five former Imperial Army men missing since World War 11. The mission, comprising a Welfare Ministry official and two former soldiers, is leaving Tokyo on Saturday fot the East Caroline Islands, north of New Guinea, to conduct a one-month search. Occasional war survivors left behind by the islandhopping advance of the Allies have continued to turn up since the war. The latest was Sergeant Shoichi Yokoi, aged 57, who emerged from the jungles of Guam last January after hiding for 27 years in shame over the Japanese defeat. He returned home to a hero’s welcome.
