U.N. Committee on Apartheid
Sir, —It is good news that New Zealand has declined to join this committee, which is an organisation rotten from the core. The presence of New Zealand would only provide a facade of respectability where none exists. Here are some of its components: the Sudan, where over a million southerners have been slaughtered because they wanted independence or separate development; Haiti, where there is the lowest standard of living in the world, no democracy or human rights, and power is in the hands of a sadistic monster; Algeria and Syria, the centres of terrorist training, including that against Israel; Nigeria, where over two million Ibos died because they wanted independence; the Ukraine, part of the U.S.S.R., Somalia, a Russian protectorate; India, which has denied democracy in Kashmir and overrun the Nagas, Goa, and Hyderabad, and where 45 million Untouchables are social outcasts. For this committee to dictate to South Africa is an insult to common decencies.—Yours, etc., A C. R. ELDERTON. October 10, 1972.
