ANTARCTIC RESEARCH

Starlifters start season The summer research season in the Antarctic officially got under way yesterday with the arrival at Williams Field of two Military Airlift Command Starlifters which had been delayed in Christchurch for two days because of bad weather in the McMurdo Sound area. On board were 165 men including the commander of the U.S. Navy Antarctic support force (Captain A. N. Fowler) and his immediate staff, the superintendent of the Antarctic division of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (Mr R. B. Thomson), and the new Scott Base leader (Major P. G. Frazer). The first Starlifter left Christchurch at 10 a.m. and the second at 1 p.m. They touched down on the runway at Williams Field at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively. Both aircraft were back in Christchurch last evening.
