Rare birds threatened
rN.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright) KUALA LUMPUR, Oct. 10. The Malayan Nature Society gives a warning in its latest newsletter that several species of rare water birds in Malaysia are nearing extinction.
A recent survey showed that, in one area where, in 1934, 70 nests of the large egret, a dozen nests of the grey heron, and three nests c' the milky stork, were recorded, observers saw only 14 adult grey herons, and no large egrets or milky storks — or even the remains of their nests.
Villagers admitted gathering the eggs of these rare birds for several years, and selling the young egrets and grey herons at five Malaysian dollars (about SNZI.6O) each m the local markets.
