Stablemates go well
"The Press" Special Service OTAKI. The stablemates. Black Rod and Topsy, showed good form in training at Otakl yesterday morning, in preparation for Wellington on Saturday. Working 40ft out on the course proper, which was easy after overnight rain, Topsy was at little more than a working canter for the first two furlongs of her six but still managed the distance in Imln 23 2-ssec, the last half-mile in 53sec. She was galloping evenly throughout and she is going to be hard to beat in the Wainui Handicap, which she won last year. Black Rod finished a length behind Flying Crest, with Ash a further length away after six furlongs In Imln 19 l-Ssec, the last half-mile in 53 4-ssec. Flying Crest got away by two lengths at the start and his rivals were not asked seriously to make up the margin. Flying Crest may find the Wainui distance too short but is very well and might surprise. Bally Lucky worked smartly over five furlongs in Imln 7sec. He Is an Improver for the final event at Trentham Thanksgiving a leading contender for the Shorts Handicap, scampered over half a mile in 52sec, the last three furlongs in Msec.
