Just Imagine dining Italian style in the fully restored, old world dining room of the early Shades Hotel! The ALLEGRO ITALIAN RESTAURANT, at the rear of Tonee Travel, 108 Hereford St., sounds romantic, and it is. Soft lighting, panelled walls, a sparkling chandelier and velvet upholstery all help achieve a supreme dignity and elegance. The Allegro is the only specialised Italian restaurant in N.Z., and a peek inside the king size menu indicates some tempting treats in store. Just to run through — there are fruit juices and soups, antipasto, spaghetti and rice dishes, chicken dishes and fish, plus a variety of steaks and veal. Chef’s specialities range from $1.90, and not forgetting to mention the cold dishes and salads, plus a variety of unusual sweets and cassatas. Fresh vegetables and fresh fruit add lively home flavour to every dish, and prices are surprisingly moderate when you dine differently... and delightfully, at the ALLEGRO ITALIAN RESTAURANT. Phone 72-600. ★ ★ ★ ★ I'll leave the eeny-meeny-miny-mo to you . . . but when you’ve finished fluttering your eyelids at our magnificent new Town Hall, what about choosing a trusty, reliable, trade-in model sewing machine for yourself, from the twenty or so tidy models over the road at lAN ALDRIDGE AND CO. LTD. Even the very cheapest model, at $lB.OO, is fully overhauled and reconditioned, and each and every machine carries a twelve months guarantee! You’ll find both free arm and flat bed models, with foot or knee control, and one thing is certain — that you can shop for a first class, second hand, sewing machine with complete confidence, from lAN ALDRIDGE AND CO. LTD., the Husqvarna shop, on the corner of Colombo and Kilmore Sts. Phone 60-913. ★ ★ ★ ★ To invite old age or to woo youth — that’s the burning question. I'm all on the wooing side these days, and obviously HANAFINS are too, because they've the biggest range of wrinkle-chasing sunglasses in the city. You can pay as little as $l.OO for sunglasses with gaily coloured frames, but Hanafins also have fashionable black, tortoise shell or metal frames, plus elegant clip-on flip-up styles for bespectacled folk. Even the kiddies are catered for with sunglasses from 75c, and there’s also a handy one day repair service at HANAFINS CHEMISTS, 749 Colombo St. or 282 High St. ★ ★ ★ ★ "Pat" and "Pam" are a bright pair of “girls." I met them this week at NATURAL FOODS, probably one of the friendliest shops in town, where they enjoy having a chat. Here's a great place to shop if you're interested in good health and natural foods, and they also specialise in natural cosmetics which contain no chemicals or alcohol. A popular specialty, at Natural Foods, is their special "vital foods" loaf from Redcliffs, which is genuinely hand-made and hand moulded. Priced at 35c, it’s just one among dozens of delicious health specialties, available at NATURAL FOODS, 808 Colombo St., not far from the new Town Hall. Phone 50-952. ★ ★ Artistry and craftsmanship abound in fanciful array at the quaint, copper-labelled handcraft shop situated just over the road from the N.Z.R. Road Services. Right now F.A.W.E. CRAFTS are loaded with lively ideas for overseas posting, ranging from their colourful Maori rock drawing posters at $l.OO to washable, rock drawing table mats, and wooden dip bowls skilfully turned in matt finish mahogany. Little luxury accessories include pure silk scarves by Fanny Buss, but prize for perfection goes to the pottery gleaned from leading N.Z. potters and some superb wooden carvings by Pat Mulcahy ... all available in the handsome handcrafted selection at F.A.W.E. CRAFTS, 57 Victoria St. Phone 30-951. ★ ★ ★ ★ Flamboozled .. . lovely word ... a mixture of flamboyant and bamboozled, and that would best describe an exhilarated Arnold Bell just back from Auckland and in a merry after thefair muddle, when I called at BRANDON HOUSE. Spotted a pair of floral linen Little-Boy-Lost wing style chairs, priced at $75 and $lOO respectively, plus a pair of Hepplewhite dining chairs in the camel back design, with exotically tasselled covers. I also cast an admiring eye at a small carved-top, Australian cedar chiffonier designed with double cupboards and top drawers for linen and silver, and Mr Bell also has in stock a superb German piano, circa 1800, priced at $5OO, which comes in a cross-banded mahogany case in low line styling, with the graceful lyre base. And waiting to be snapped up for some lucky buyer is a dainty antique china cabinet in figured mahogany ... yours for a very deserving $lOO. at BRANDON HOUSE ... the home of hand picked, polished treasures, at 165 Victoria St. Phone 77-509. ★ ★ ★ ★ My merry mop of natural black curls gave an extra bounce just for you, when I spotted the "special -offer” notice in the window of THE HAIRSTYLE CENTRE, 208 High St. Yes . . . you’ll save a thrifty $5 on the price of a genuine cold wave, during October and November. Usually $10.50, their special price right now, is only $5.50! It's a great preChristmas saving offer during October and November, at THE HAIRSTYLE CENTRE. Phone 67-280.
