Arctic rescue
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) NEW YORK, Oct. 10. One hundred and eighty sailors trapped aboard two United States ships in 6ft of Arctic pack ice have begun a week-long wait for a Canadian ice-breaker they hope will tow them to safety. The Canadian ship, John A. MacDonald, left Broughton Island, off Newfoundland, on Saturday on its rescue voyage through the fastfreezing Greenland Sea. The United States Coast Guard in Washington said that the 120 crew aboard the icebreaker Edisto and the 60 men aboard the deep-sea Navy research vessel Mizar were not in danger. Both ships are stuck fast northeast of Greenland.
The two ships collided on Friday while the Edisto was towing the Mizar inside the Arctic circle. There were no reports of injuries, but the Edisto’s rudder was smashed and one of two propellers gone.
