Auckland singers dominate
Auckland entries dominate the solo section of the Mobil Song Quest semi-finals. Ten of the 16 soloists and two of the eight vocal groups come from Auckland.
The 24 entries are taking part in a series of radio broadcasts to decide who will go to the final in Christchurch on October 19. Among the semi-finalists is Janice Lunn, of Mt Roskill, whose husband, Jack Lunn, was in the final 40 this year and was a finalist in 1962. Pamela Renouf, who last
year competed in the Sydney “Sun” Eisteddfod, and took three winner’s sashes, will also be in the semi-finals, as will Patricia-Ann Shaw, who was a finalist in the Sydney “Sun” Aria this year.
Semi-finalists from Christchurch are Peter Williams, Keith Lewis, and Noreen Welch, who was a semifinalist in the last Mobil Song Quest. Mr Williams is a member of the Christchurch Cathedral Choir, and has recorded programmes with the N.Z.B.C. for local transmission.
In the group section Wellington is represented by the Markham Singers, three girls from Onslow College, Lesley Moody, Stephanie Hunt and Karen Fergus. Bookings recently opened in Christchurch for the final cdncert, which will be held in the Town Hall. All proceeds from the final concert will go to the Commonwealth Games Appeal. Prize money of more than $2OOO will be presented to the finalists by the Mayor (Mr N. G. Pickering) at the end of the concert, and the ceremony will be televised on the national network.
