Flamenco
“The Flamenco of Manitas; is something more than Flamenco, it is something else for which a name has to be found.” So said Picasso in remarking on the work of this gypsy guitarist, whose fierce and exciting rhythms captivate the listening audience, and transport them into the romantic world of the Carmargue gypsy.
Manitas was bom in the small fishing village of Sete in the south of France, and from an early age took to playing the guitar. He has had no formal training but is acclaimed by aficionados as the greatest living exponent of flamenco.
B;B.C. cameras were at the Bullring in Birmingham and on the stage of the Odeon Cinema, New Street, Birmingham, to record the highlights of a concert he gave on his third tour of Britain. Manitas appeared with members of his family — all talented guitarists and flamenco singers. In the Bullring itself, he played to the Birmingham crowd prior to the evening concert. “Manitas de Plata at the Bullring” is on CHTV3’s programme next Friday.
