LONDON.
R. J. Charles may leave the United states professional golf circuit next year to play in Britain and Europe, according to the “Daily Mail.” “This has nothing to do with my bad year over there,” says Charles. “It is all to do with my children and their education. I will make a decision early next year.”
If Charles decides to give up his home in Dallas, Texas, he expects to choose between Britain and South Africa as the place for a permanent home. His wife is South African. And he intends to take up weight-lifting after his suc-
i cess in the rich John Player (Classic this week. Charles, aged 36, attributes his £15,000 win to a fitness programme started by his friend, the South African golfer, G. Player. He says that he has been jogging every day for the last two months on the advice of Player, whom he had told about his problem of tiring over the final holes of a round.
"Now I feel really fit. I think it made all the differ-
ence,” Charles said yesterday. “Gary now wants me to start weight-lifting to improve my physique and I shall probably take his advice again.” The win was the most lucrative of Charles’s career. His steady golf won the day from P. Oosterhuis, whose wild drive at the 17th cost him a seven and made a difference of £9OOO. The next big tournament in Britain is the Dunlop Masters, then the Piccadilly world match-play championship.
