R.A.F. safety in question
(N Z Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, Oct. 2.
Royal Air Force pilots have crashed 14 Harrier jump-jets within three years, the "Sunday Times” reports. Four pilots have been killed, and almost all the aircraft destroyed.
There have been many less serious mishaps with the Harrier, the “Sunday Times” says in an article questioning R.A.F. safety standards. The newspaper’s investigating team says that the R.A.F.'s weekly accidents bill is running to almost £lm. The reasons for the crashes do not appear to relate to the aircraft, nor to the pilots, but to the R.A.F’s “conglomeration of authority," lacking status and manpower, and with divided responsibility.
