Rabbi taken into custody

JERUSALEM, Oct. 2.
The police today took Rabbi Meir Kahane, the leader of the militant Jewish Defence League, into custody for 48 hours for questioning in connection with the league’s attempts to smuggle weapons out of Israel for counter-attacks on Arab guerrillas in Europe and elsewhere.
No charges have been preferred. but the rabbi can be held for up to 48 hours for interrogation without a court order.
The league’s secretary, Josef Schneider, who was questioned by the police last week in connection with the gun-smuggling, was also taken into custody today.
