REFUSAL OF GRANT
Summit Road survey The investigation was far from complete, at most only one-third done, said the chairman (Mr G. P. A. de Latour) when the Akaroa County Council yesterday discussed the refusal of the Ministry of Works to renew the grant for the survey for the proposed Summit Road extension.
The District Commissioner of Works (Mr P. F. Reynolds) wrote saying that as investigation work was completed, an extension of the access track was not considered to be eligible for roadsvote subsidy.
When Cr W. S. t. Mcßae said the track would deteriorate if not maintained, Mr de Latour said not much could be done this year, as it was too late now to apply for a roads vote.
“Then we should try in full force next year,” said Cr T. J. Brocherie.
“A spate of people have objected to this scheme, but now we are starting to get support,” said Mr de Latour. “As to criticism that this work would cause damage, there must be 100 miles of bulldozed tracks on Banks Peninsula, and no damage has been done.”
Cr A. J. Boleyn said that those against the project were a very small minority. The executive of Banks Peninsula Federated Fanners wrote saying that it unanimously supported the scheme, and was concerned that funds had been withheld.
